Grants for Russian Contemporary Literature in Translation
A new grants programme by Russkiy Mir coordinated by Academia Rossica
The Russkiy Mir Foundation (Moscow), the Russian Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications and Academia Rossica (London) announce the start of the new grants programme for the translation of contemporary Russian literature into English.
The programme aims to promote Russian literature internationally and expand cultural and intellectual links between Russia and the English-speaking world. While many of Russia’s 19th century classics populate the canon of world literature, the vibrant and immersive scene of Russian contemporary literature is currently inaccessible to non-Russian readers. It is this new writing that reflects modern Russia, a country which has undergone monumental changes in last few decades, and it is the country’s new authors that offer the world a chance to see today’s Russia from the inside.
Publishers and translators are invited to apply for funding to translate contemporary fiction and poetry; literary non-fiction titles and new translations of classics may also be eligible if they are exceptional in terms of literary value. The scheme supports only translations from the original Russian text.
The Russkiy Mir Foundation is a joint project of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Science and is supported by both public and private funds. Its mission is to promote understanding and peace in the world by supporting, enhancing and encouraging the appreciation of Russian language, heritage and culture.
The new translation grants are part of a wider programme promoting contemporary Russian literature internationally.
