Biography
Dmitry Glukhovsky is both an author of fiction and a journalist: he rose to prominence in 2002 when, at the age of 23, he made the provocative move of publishing his first novel, Metro 2033, free on his own website. Metro 2033 uses an imaginative dystopia of the near-future to analyse today's Russia: the legacy of communism and the rise of fascistic nationalism. Since its online publication, the novel has become an interactive experiment, drawing in many readers, and has been made into a highly successful video game. In 2005 it was printed by an established publisher and has become a nationwide bestseller: by 2009, over 400,000 copies had been sold in Russia alone, while its online was five times bigger. The foreign publication rights have now been sold in more than 35 languages. An indirect sequel, Metro 2034, was published in 2009 to great success and acclaim: it was Russia’s bestseller in 2009. The book has also been published online for free on the Metro 2034 Official Web Site, where over a million visitors have read the text. Glukhovsky has turned the book into an art-project, inviting famous Russian electronic performer Dolphin to write an original soundtrack for the novel, while artist Anton Gretchko worked on the oil paintings for the gallery.
Glukhovsky has recently written his third novel, It’s Getting Darker, and continues to publish the satirical series Stories of the Motherland on his blog. He is also currently in negotiation with Hollywood studios and producers to sell the film rights to his novels.
In his other incarnation as a journalist, Dmitry Glukhovsky has worked across Europe for EuroNews TV in France, Deutsche Welle in Germany, and Russia Today in Russia. In 2008-2009 he had a radio show on Mayak Radio Station. He also writes columns for Harper’s Bazaar, L’Officiel and Playboy. He has lived in Israel, Germany and France and speaks English, French, German, Hebrew and Spanish, as well as his native Russian.
